HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — The National Weather Service in Wakefield has determined straight line wind, not a tornado, caused significant damage in Henrico County Thursday night.

“[I[ just finished looking at the damage from Regency Square eastward to the Raceway complex, as well as Mechanicsville, and all damage appears to be straight line wind,” Bill Sammler, with the National Weather Service, said. “[I] could not find evidence of a tornado.”

Sammler added the damaging wind reached speeds of 70 m.p.h.

More than 80,000 Dominion Virginia Power customers remained without power in Henrico at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Downed trees blocked nearly 100 roads in the county.

Henrico County closed schools on Friday due to the extensive power outages and tree damage. Friday was to be the county’s last day of school. School officials are working on a plan to tie up loose ends like final exams, grades, report cards, teacher checkout, laptop returns, and picking up school medication.
