COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. -- A man is in custody after police say he abducted a seven-year-old girl.  The child has been found safe, according to the Colonial Heights Police Department.

Police say 33-year-old Travis D. Bennett, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, kidnapped the girl at about 9 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of Lakeview Park Road.  The suspect is known to the child's mother, but he has no biological ties to the young victim, according to investigators.

An AMBER Alert was about to be issued when North Carolina Highway Patrol found the child safely in Weldon, NC.   Bennett is currently being extradited back to Colonial Heights.

The Colonial Heights Police Department has been working with the Virginia State Police, the FBI, and the Weldon, NC Police Department during this investigation.
