HANOVER COUNTY, Va. -- Michael Carr Teegarden, 52, pleaded guilty to four counts of taking indecent liberties with a child Monday in a Hanover courtroom.

Teegarden was an assistant principal at Lee-Davis High School and engaged in a sexual relationship with a student in 1999-2000, according to Hanover Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Wood. He also worked as an administrator in Richmond County Schools.

All but 18 months of Teegarden's 20-year prison sentence was suspended after Monday's plea.

In February, Teegarden was sentenced to 20 years in prison after his 2015 arrest on child pornography charges.

Teegarden was arrested after law enforcement searched his Mechanicsville home in October.

"During the search, Teegarden admitted using the Internet to search for and download child pornography. He also admitted that child pornography would be found on his computers," a spokesman for Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring said. "Investigators seized several electronic devices from Teegarden’s residence… The forensic examination corroborated the Teegarden’s admissions, revealing hundreds of images of child pornography on his electronic devices."

Most of Teegarden’s prison sentence in the child pornography case was suspended as well. He received four years of active prison time.

At the time of his October arrest, Teegarden served as the Virginia chairman for the Martin O’Malley presidential campaign.

The campaign severed all ties with Teegarden following his arrest.
