ASHLAND, Va. -- An Ashland man was arrested and charged with aggravated malicious wounding after he used a machete to attack a man during a fight, an Ashland Police spokesman said. The fight happened Friday, at about 10:30 p.m., at about a motel along the 600 block of North Washington Highway (Route 1) in Ashland.

"Upon arrival, officers encountered an adult male suffering from severe injuries resulting from an attack with a machete," Ashland Police Officers Chip Watts said. "The victim was transported to VCU Medical Center for treatment of his injuries."

Jose Menjivar, 30, was later arrested and charged with aggravated malicious wounding. He was booked at Pamunkey Regional Jail.

Both Menjivar and the victim live at the motel, police said.

Ashland Police want the public to know they believe the Friday night violence was isolated.  "There's no implication of any gang activity or drugs involved in the situation," said Watts.

He said the two got into a disagreement that quickly escalated, but would not go into specfics.

"The suspect took it to the next level," Watts said.

"I'm shocked to hear it, that guy just asked me for a ride to the store," said bridge worker Bobby Alexander.

At the motel off Washington Highway, Alexander says the machete violence is far from the norm. "It’s usually kinda’ quiet here and stays quiet," said Alexander.

If convicted, CBS 6 legal expert Todd Stone says Menijvar faces up to life in prison for the machete attack.
