40th annual Norfolk Harborfest, the largest, longest running free Maritime Festival in the Country, is in Town Point Park, Downtown Norfolk Waterfront, continues Friday and Saturday, noon-11pm, Sunday 10am-6pm. The historic waterfront festival offers a weekend packed with thrilling activities on land and sea to include tall ships and the Parade of Sail, artisan foods and beverages, work boat races, unique and unusual performances, one of the largest fireworks shows on the East Coast, family games and activities, national and regional entertainment, and much more. Athletes from all across Virginia will be competing in the annual Special Olympics Summer Games. This year is Special Olympics Virginia’s first outside ceremony in more than 30 years. And a special appearance by Rayvon Owen, American Idol finalist and Richmond native, will be performing a free mini-concert after the Ceremony, which starts at 7:45 pm Friday, June 10 in Robins Stadium and includes fireworks. Virginia’s Governor Terry McAuliffe also will be making an appearance to conduct a ceremonial signing of Virginia’s ABLE Act. Fans are encouraged to sign up to cheer online at www.volunteer2cheer.com, and if you can’t make it, don’t worry you can still get in on the action, the University of Richmond will be live streaming several of this year’s events. The wait is finally over, “Kehinde Wiley – A New Republic” exhibition will open to the public Saturday at The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Museum Director Alex Nyerges says of the artist “Wiley is one of the most popular artists in America today.” “The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts was one of the first comprehensive art museums to acquire his portraits, and we are thrilled to present a larger selection of his work to the public. These paintings and sculptures challenge centuries of stereotypes, and we hope our visitors will feel engaged and make the connection between Wiley’s works and those in our galleries.” The exhibition features more than 50 monumental paintings and sculptures and will be on view June 11 through September 5. The museum is also offering several events that include an Artist Talk with Kehinde Wiley Friday, June 10, at 6 pm, tickets are required and a family day – Celebrate African and African-American Art Saturday, June 11, from 11am – 3 pm, Participants receive free admission to the exhibition thanks to the Richmond, VA. Higher Achievement Richmond’s first Field Day RVA is Saturday, June 11, registration starts at 10:30am and the event starts 11am  at the Bon Secours Redskins Training Center, 2401 West Leigh Street. You’re invited to revisit your childhood day their days by participating in a water balloon toss, three-legged race, capture the flag, and tug of war – all to support Higher Achievement, a local an after school and summer academic program for middle school students in Richmond. The event will have a beer truck provided by Love Land and Distributors, food trucks, music, and a special appearance by guest judge Nutzy the Flying Squirrel. Teams of six to ten participants will compete and are also encouraged to dress in a uniform for a team uniform contest. Come cheer the CBS 6 Team on to victory. Jammin on The James is back Saturday 6pm – 8pm with Red Light Rodeo for a free concerts on the grounds of Wilton Museum, Wilton, Wilton, 215 S. Wilton Road. Bring a picnic basket and lawn chairs for family friendly music on our scenic terrace overlooking the James River. Activities include complimentary evening tours of Wilton as well as face-painting, games, and crafts for kids. Free admission.  All concerts are rain or shine.  Donations appreciated. Virginia War Memorial Artifacts Roadshow-Summer Edition, Saturday, 10am – 12:30pm Galanti Education Center Open 9am – 4pm, the Public is invited to bring in military-related memorabilia from any era for expert review and preservation tips. Artifacts will be reviewed by Virginia War Memorial Curator Jesse Smith and noted military collectible experts Robert House and Warren Shindle from Virginia Beach. No charge for individual reviews, No monetary values or appraisals given. Dealers prohibited and Weapons, small arms and ordinance items will be checked for safety prior to review by representatives of Green Top Hunting & Fishing. 4th annual Richmond Bacon Festival, Sunday from 11am – 5pm, at the 17th Street Farmer’s Market, Shockoe Bottom. Featuring 40 of the areas favorite restaurants including a food truck court.
