RICHMOND, Va. — Not only is it Friday, it’s the first Friday of June. That means its National Donut Day!

National Donut Day was actually started by the Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938. The day actually honors “donut lassies,” who served treats to soldiers on the front lines during World War I.

While the day isn’t the national day to celebrate the actual food (November 5), doughnut shops across the country are still offering free doughnuts to customers.

Here are some of the local deals:

Krispy Kreme is offering a free doughnut of your choice all day:

Dunkin’ Donuts is offering a free doughnut with a beverage purchase:

Duck Donuts has free sugar doughnuts all day. No purchase necessary.

Sugar Shack will have a variety of specials.
