COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. – Police are looking for the woman who pulled up outside the Colonial Heights Animal Shelter around 10 p.m. June 2, and abandoned a dog.

She may be facing a criminal charge for tying up and leaving the emaciated dog outside the shelter.

Police said anyone can legally drop off an animal at the shelter if they cannot care for it, or even call the police department for assistance when the shelter is closed.

"The problem is someone is leaving the dog there, tied up outside of the shelter when no one is around,” said Sgt. Rob Ruxer with Colonial Heights Police.

“There's wild animals and we know for a fact there's coyotes in the area. Anything could have gotten to his dog and the dog couldn't have escaped.”

Ruxer said police officers would have gladly helped the woman get the dog into the shelter, but since she abandoned it in the middle of the night, she committed a crime and could face misdemeanor charges.

If you know the woman in this video you're asked to call police.
