BELLPORT, NY — The rain did not stop a young boy and a World War II veteran from sharing a patriotic moment on Memorial Day.

A boy named Nicholas was set to perform in the parade Monday morning, but bad weather led organizers to cancel the parade. Nicholas was disappointed he would not be able to play, so his mother Mary decided to drive along the planned parade route with him. During the drive, he played his trumpet through the car window.

While driving, they ran into a World War II veteran who was sitting along the route with his daughter. He, too, was disappointed that the parade had been cancelled. So, Nicholas played his trumpet for the veteran — much to both of their delight.

“It was all so very lovely!” the boy’s mother said on Facebook.
