RICHMOND , Va. -- Despite the rain, thousands gathered at the Virginia War Memorial Monday morning.

The holiday marked the 60th annual ceremony to honor those who have served.

"I think every American needs to remember exactly what Memorial Day is all about," said Mark McCracken of Midlothian.

He and his friends were there to honor their friend Kyle, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2013.

Kyle now has a brick at the War Memorial in his honor.

The event was co-hosted by American Legion District 11.

Those there said it's important to remember when the holiday is truly about.

"It's meant to give us pause to give us pause, to give us a moment to stop to remember what it is that we have," said McCracken.
