DUI driver leads police on chase through three counties

CHESTERFIELD, Va. — An alleged DUI suspect fled through three counties trying to escape police.

Police said that eight minutes before midnight, they received word that a grey SUV was driving all over the roadway on Hull Street Road, near Winterpock Rd.

Officers came upon the vehicle and it didn’t stop.

The pursuit went into Amelia County and ultimately stopped in Prince Edward County.

Virgina State Police stopped the driver on Rt. 460 westbound and were able to take him into custody. Amelia and Nottoway County Police Departments were also involved.

Lt. Higgins with Chesterfield Police said Joseph Payne Jr. has been charged with felony eluding and DUI, along with a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving. Charges still pending from other jurisdictions.
