RICHMOND, Va -- Police officers throughout metro Richmond are leaving their patrol cars at the station and jumping on bikes for a ride to Washington, D.C.
The ride is part of the "Bike for the Blue" ride in honor of officers who have died in the line of duty.
They will be leaving from the Virginia State Capitol at around 6:30 Friday morning. The ride is about 110 miles. Officers will head up along Route 1 until they reach the nation's capital. There, they will take part in a ceremony honoring fallen officers.
More than 100 officers from throughout the commonwealth are taking part in the ride. Among them are 29 officers from the Richmond Police Department.
"We organize this ride every year to honor those who lost their lives protecting the citizens and making the communities safer," Richmond Police Officer Sgt. Papaleo.
This is the twenty first year the Richmond Police Department has taken part in the ride.
