RICHMOND, Va. -- Ritalin was stolen from the nurse's office at Chimborazo Elementary School, in April.

Police were dispatched to investigate at the school, in the 3000 block of East Marshall Street, when the medication was discovered stolen.

Over a two-day period, April 4-5, several medications disappeared from the locked medicine locker in the nurse’s office, according to police.

The suspect also took the sign-in sheets for the medication.

One mother told CBS 6 that the medicine she brought in should have lasted least three weeks. But after just a few days, she said she was told her son only had three pills left.

"Yeah,17 pills that I took up there," she said. "Me and the assistant nurse counted them out. There were 17. I signed a sheet log, he signed the medicine log documenting the medicine was there --then the medicine came up missing and the sheet log came up missing."

She also told CBS 6 that her son's file didn't contain all of the medical documents sent over by the doctor, which outlines exactly how much medication he's to take every day in school.

"I don't even know if he was taking the medicine or not, now. Seventeen pills are missing and it's a narcotic and at a public school, and elementary school at that," she said. "That's pretty bad."

Richmond Public schools said they've expressed their deepest apology to the students and family. And said that in the wake of the disappearance of several medications they've put two new accountability protocols in place division-wide, so this won't happen again.

That includes, they said, getting medical documents scanned into the CareDox online medical management system within 48 hours of receiving them, and implementing a staff change medication accountability form.

Police are still investigating this incident. There are no suspects at this time, police said.
