CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- There are more than 5,000 kids in the state - more than 300 in the city of Richmond alone - who would love to have a stable mother in their lives; love to celebrate Mother's Day.

But it's a lot to ask to take in a child who is not your own.

Tammy Franges of Bon Air said it's her joy - her "dream life."

She's getting ready to adopt her sixth child, along with raising four of her own. Most are grown and on their way in the world.

What does it take?

"I don't think there are any unique qualifications," she said. "Other than a willingness to learn."

Obviously, you have to be a stable adult with a good home and steady income and lots of love and time.

She admits mistakes, ones that have helped her as an adoption counselor for United Methodist Family Services.

"A mom is someone with love in her heart who is always there," said her 28-year-old daughter, Cassie Franges, adopted at 10 and now has her own home and on a nursing career path at 28.

Tammy Franges said being there to see and feel it all - the ups and the downs - is "so important and really rewarding."

See more of her story in Mark Holmberg’s video report.
