JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A Florida mother said she and her son were beat-up after they opened a stranger's car door to let a dog out of the hot vehicle. The dog's owner and her brother were arrested and charged with battery.

Melanie May told Action News Jacksonville she saw the dog inside the car parked outside a Dollar General.

"Somebody left their dog in 93 degree weather," May said. "They had about an inch of air on either side with their windows down."

May said after she let the dog out, she and her son went into the store to find the dog' owner.

They soon encountered Kendra Smith.

"(She) was very mad, very irritated, and very violent about messing with her vehicle," May said.

Smith and her brother got into a physical altercation with May and her son.

When police arrived, officer found the bloodied pair.

Despite their injuries, May said she would do it again -- if it meant saving a dog.
