PATHANKOT, Punjab — A 15-year-old boy in India accidentally shot and killed himself while taking a selfie, according to police.

Ramandeep Singh was posing with his father’s pistol Friday night when he accidentally pulled the trigger, investigators said.

Singh was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead on Sunday.

Statistics released earlier this year put India on top of the list for selfie-related deaths. India accounted for 19 — or nearly 40 percent – of the 49 fatalities over three years worldwide.

Selfie deaths are such an issue in India, police in Mumbai have installed no selfie zones in along waterfronts, CNN reported.

Other countries including Russia are also taking action. Authorities there released a brochure after a spate of fatal accidents. It includes one graphic that reminds readers that “selfie with weapons can kill you.”
