IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — It’s the touching video that’s been watched by thousands across east Idaho. A star baseball player from Hillcrest High School asked his friend with special needs to prom.

The surprise event happened during pottery class. Senior Kolten Westergard wanted to give his friend Katherine Tyler, also a senior, the perfect “promposal.”

He had 12 friends place a dozen roses on her desk followed by donuts and a sign that read, “I DONUT want to go to prom without you.” He said doing it this way was more meaningful than simply handing Katherine a dozen roses.

Kolten said he has always wanted to ask Katherine, but hasn’t had the chance until now.

“I really wanted to take up the opportunity,” Kolten told East Idaho News.

Katherine suffers from spinal bifida, a birth defect that affects spinal cord development. Katherine’s mom, Lori said her daughter has had a rough year.

“She’s been a real trooper through all of her many surgeries and illnesses,” Lori said.

Lori said she is thrilled her Katherine is going to prom.

“I about started crying, I just thought it was so sweet… I couldn’t ask for a better daughter she’s my angel I love her. I’m very blessed to have her,” Lori said.

Katherine and Kolten said they’re looking forward to an exciting prom night on April 30, a night guaranteed to be special and memorable for both. They’ve already started making plans around Katherine’s fuchsia dress.

“I’m very excited. I’ve never been so nervous and excited for a prom,” Kolten said.
