HANOVER COUNTY, Va. -- A week to the day after a trooper was gunned down at a Greyhound bus station, hundreds packed a Hanover restaurant for a fundraiser to support his family.

The event for Trooper Chad Dermyer is being held at the Riverbound Cafe at 8005 Creighton Parkway in Mechanicsville on Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Dermyer was shot and killed in the line of duty Thursday after approaching a man during a training exercise at the bus station. The shooting suspect, James Brown III, was then shot and killed by troopers nearby.

Trooper Justin Crawley and his wife, Lindsey, organized the fundraiser. Crawley and Dermyer both served together on the force.

If something happened to my husband I’d want the same thing,” Lindsey Crawley said. “We feel the love, we feel the support, and it’s important to give back.”

A group of first responders from Hanover EMS and Fire was among the many who came out to the restaurant to show support.

“It’s a brotherhood, we are a tight family and we support each other,” Hutchinson said. “We feel an obligation to be here and hope we raise as much as possible.”

The cafe will donate 20 percent of all sales to Trooper Dermyer's family. Additionally, a donation box out will be available for folks who would like to drop by to make a contribution.

Organizers said their goal is to raise at least $2,000.

"Bring your family, neighbors, and random people on the street and help us pack the tables to help support this family," a Facebook post reads.
