RICHMOND, Va. – A white substance has yet to be identified, but it caused quite a scare downtown on Wednesday.

An employee in the clerk’s office on the fifth floor of the Supreme Court Building opened an envelope and said that a white substance fell out.

The Richmond Fire Hazmat team has responded, confirmed Captain Howard, with Capitol Police.

The area has been contained, Howard said, and the entire fifth floor has been evacuated.

The sample is headed to the state lab for proper identification.

The state building sits in the 100 block of 9th street, across from the Virginia State Capitol.
