HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Major Hum Cardounel was named the new Henrico Chief of Police Tuesday morning. Cardounel, a graduate of Freeman High School in Henrico, the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University, first joined the Henrico Police force in 1988. He was promoted to Deputy Chief of Police in 2013.

"My philosophy is rather simple and I think, at times, simple is good," Cardounel said. "Do the right thing. It's not the same as doing things right. I've had some conversations with the managers and other folks about how often times it's the more difficult road to take -- doing the right thing."

He also talked about the importance of treating others fairly and with respect.

"We have been entrusted with being the guardians of our community," he said. "This is where we live, this is where we work, this is where we play and this is where we raise our families."
