RICHMOND, Va. -- A vigil took place in honor of Virginia State Trooper Chad Dermyer, who was tragically killed in the line of duty in Thursday’s Greyhound bus station shooting.

The vigil was at VCU's Siegel Center on Broad Street and started at 6:30 p.m. The event was previously slated to be held at the Diamond.

The vigil is sponsored by Richmond United for Law Enforcement and United Communities Against Crime. Organizers are asking the community to come out and unite with the law enforcement community.

People who are attending were asked to wear a navy blue shirt to show appreciation for police officers and the sacrifices they make for the community.

Remembering Chad Dermyer

Dermyer, who is from Jackson, Mich., graduated from the Virginia State Police Academy in November 2014.

He was first assigned to the Chesapeake Division’s Area 46 Office, which encompasses the cities of Newport News and Hampton, but had been recently transferred to the state police Counter-Terrorism and Criminal Interdiction Unit.

Before joining state police, Dermyer served with the City of Newport News Police Department and the Jackson, Mich., Police Department. Dermyer also served four years with the U.S. Marine Corps.

He is survived by his wife Michelle and two young children.

The Virginia State Police Association is accepting donations for the Dermyer family. Checks should be addressed to VSPA Emergency Relief Fund and with Trooper Dermyer in the “memo” line. Donations can be mailed or dropped off at the VSPA at 6944 Forest Hill Avenue in Richmond, Virginia 23225.
