RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond police are warning the public about a hoax on social media that shows a disturbing case of animal cruelty involving a woman who claims to be from Richmond.

“There is a bizarre hoax that has been occurring the last few weeks and again tonight where a woman purports to post photos of her pet dog that she has intentionally injured,” the department posted on Facebook. “The latest has a dog suspended in some sort of clamps off a back porch.”

Official said Animal Care and Control investigated the photo and deemed it a hoax.

“The Department thanks all who have cared about animals enough to have called and messaged their concern. There may be unstable people who provoke with disturbing images – but there are more of us – who deeply care for our beloved pets and stand together in their defense.”

As of Thursday night, it appeared the suspicious account that posted the photo had been deleted by Facebook.

The Daily Mailreports the photo originated in 2011 when a teenager in the Philippines pegged his puppy to a clotheslines and then posted photos on social media.
