RICHMOND, Va. - Last Week, Keon Booker reached out to WTVR CBS 6 Newswith concerns about his daughter's English teacher at Martin Luther King Middle School in Richmond.

Booker said his daughter, Ashley has not had the same English teacher the entire school year and was frustrated that she was falling behind.

However, Booker and his daughter now have a different outlook.

"I'm happy already," he said.

Mia DeJohnette, Executive Director of Born to Be Great, heard about Keon's concerns.

"Not having a permanent teacher does compromise students as a whole," DeJohnette said.

The nonprofit aims to help students throughout Central Virginia who may be struggling in the classroom.

"No child wants to not do well," DeJohnette said. "It's our job to help them so we wanted to take Ashley and turn this situation around for her and her dad."

The organization focuses on working with students who come from low-income households or those living in poverty.

DeJohnette said they are determined to help Ashley succeed by tutoring her several times a week for free.

"It's going to align with her classroom instruction so that Ashley will be able to bring her grades up and pass her SOLs in English," she said.

And while things may not change overnight, Keon and Ashley are looking forward to her progress.

"There's obstacles that we're going to have to get through, but we're going to get through them together," Booker said.
