Virginia-born Earl Hamner Jr., the creator of The Walton’s television show, passed away on Thursday, March 24.

Hamner, age 92,  died at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, reportedly from bladder cancer. He had also recently battled  pneumonia.

The Walton’s was one of the most beloved family shows on TV.

The show centered around Hamner’s upbringing during the depression in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. He chronicled this lifestyle in his book Spencer’s Mountain, which served as the basis for the TV series.

The Walton’s aired for nine seasons and won a dozen Emmy awards. Hamner also created the prime-time soap opera “Falcons Crest.”

“He was a Virginia gentleman and he loved and cared for all people,” his daughter Caroline told the L.A. Times.  “They broke the mold after they made him.”
