CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — The family dog was home alone when fire ripped through a house on Conifer Road in Chesterfield Thursday morning. The dog made it out of the burning home alive.

Chesterfield fire crews were called to the home, near Hopkins Road,  at about 9 a.m. Thursday, Chesterfield Fire and EMS spokesman Lt. Jason Elmore said.

“Fire crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from an attached porch on the side of the house. The fire was rapidly spreading into the residence and the attic,” Lt. Elmore said. “No one was at home at the time of the fire and a dog was able to escape on its own. It took fire crews approximately 35 minutes to get the fire under control.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Two people who live in the house were being helped by family members, Elmore said.
