RICHMOND, Va. — A brush fire that burned near Belle Isle in Richmond Wednesday was marked under control Thursday morning, a Richmond Fire spokesman said. Fire crews will remain on Belle Isle to make sure the fire does not re-ignite Thursday.
Fire officials believe recent rains caused logs to wash down the James River. Some of those logs got stuck on a small rock island near Belle Isle. The logs caught fire and Wednesday’s wind helped spread the flames. While the actual cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials believed the fire was probably man made.
An increased fire danger exists Thursday as well.
“With the relative humidity low and the winds high, conditions are right for outdoor fires to spread quickly,” Henrico fire spokesman Capt. Danny Rosenbaum said. “On days like today a cigarette thrown out a car window or into the mulch can easily start a fire.”
Richmond Fire officials also reminded people on the rocks in the James River to not light campfires and watch their cigarettes.
