VARINIA, Va. - Virginia State Police continue to search for a silver sedan investigators said fired two shots at a family driving down Interstate 295 Saturday night.  A father, mother, and child were traveling down the interstate around 9:30pm when a silver sedan pulled up next to them, fired two shots, and then sped off, according to their report to police.

The family was able to pull over at the Exxon gas station on New Market Rd. in Varina to call for help.

Local driver Zonnie Watson said he is saddened to hear of the situation but not surprised.

"That kind of behavior is just an animal, you know. No human regard for life at all," said Watson.

EMS personnel treated the driver of the vehicle at the Exxon, but he was not badly hurt, according to police.

"It could have been a whole lot worse. They could have lost control of the car, veered into the other lane and we could have had a catastrophe," said Watson.

Even though I-295 is not as heavily traveled as other interstates in the area, state police investigators are asking anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious near 295 and Rt. 5 Saturday night to give them a call.  Police said the family who was shot at did the right thing when they immediately pulled over and called for help.

At this point, police have not released a motive for the shooting incident.
