HANOVER COUNTY, Va — Sheriff’s deputies will be taking part in a national effort to curb drunk driving on St. Patrick’s Day.

A checkpoint will be set up on Friday, March 18th. Drivers going through the checkpoint will be stopped and have to present their driver’s license. If they’re suspected of being drunk, they’ll be pulled aside for field sobriety tests.

DUI patrols will also be increased during St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

A driver convicted of DUI can face a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. They may also have their license suspended by a year.
