RICHMOND, Va. —  A surface storm system will track past the area today into tonight and develop into a stronger storm off the Mid-Atlantic coast.  Light precipitation will move in this evening, but the air will be very dry, causing any snow or rain to initially evaporate before it reaches the ground.

Temperatures for this storm will be in the low to mid 30s, keeping surface temperatures above freezing at the onset of the precipitation.  Some sleet or rain may mix in across the metro with areas far south and southeast changing over to all rain.

The main period of steadier snowfall looks to be between midnight and daybreak.  Due to ground temperatures, it will take a little while for the snow to begin to stick.  Once the snow chills the ground enough, we will begin to see accumulation on grassy surfaces and elevated surfaces.  After a longer period of snow, untreated roads will begin to get slippery and start to see some accumulation as well.   The temperatures for this event will keep this a wet, slushy snow.

Accumulations across central Virginia will be in the 1 to 3 inch range, but some higher totals are possible from the metro eastward into the Northern Neck and  parts of the Middle Peninsula.  Areas farther southeast will see lower amounts (if any at all) due to warmer temperatures and the changeover to rain.  With the track of the storm, far northwestern Virginia will see lighter amounts as well.  Please keep in mind that if the track of coastal storm shifts a bit, this will affect the accumulations.

Advisories

The precipitation will end from west to east Friday morning through midday.  Afternoon temperatures will get well into the 40s for most areas, allowing any accumulations to melt.  Temperatures Friday night into Saturday morning will dip into the 20s, so any leftover moisture will become icy, but highs on Saturday will get back up to around 50°.
