HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — Henrico Sheriff Mike Wade has dropped out of the 7th district congressional race, sources tell CBS 6.

Wade had planned on challenging congressman Dave Brat (R.) for the GOP nomination to represent the 7th District in Congress.

This means that brat will now run unopposed.

Wade has been Henrico’s sheriff for 16 years. Before being elected, he served on Henrico’s police force for 22 years.

Brat was first elected to congress in November 2014, after stunning House Majority Leader Eric Cantor earlier that year in the GOP primary. Cantor held the seat for 14 years.

The 7th District stretches from the West End of Richmond, includes portions of Henrico and Chesterfield Counties, up to up Spotsylvania County.
