RICHMOND, Va -- Do you consider yourself a safe driver with no dangerous driving habits? AAA says you're probably wrong about that.

About nine in ten drivers have engaged in at least one risky driving behavior in the past month, according to a new AAA report.

Among those habits:

  • Distracted driving: 70 percent of drivers have texted while driving in the last month. Thirty percent admitted they texted while driving on a regular basis.
  • Speeding: Do you have a lead foot? AAA found 48 percent of drivers admitted to going 15 miles per hour over the speed limit on the expressway at least once in the last month. Fifteen percent admitted to doing it regularly. In Virginia, going faster than 80 miles per hour is reckless driving. Going more than 20 miles per hour than the speed limit is also reckless driving.
  • Drowsy driving: 32 percent of drivers admitted to driving while being very tired at least once in the past month. By that, they mean they were barely able to keep their eyes open.
  • Running red lights: About 39 percent of drivers admitted to driving through an intersection where a light had just turned red -- when they had the opportunity to safely stop -- in the last month. Twenty-six percent of drivers admitted to running red lights like this several times in the past month.
  • Skipping the seat belts: 18 percent of drivers admitted to driving without putting a seat belt on at least once in the last month.
  • Impaired driving: 13 percent of drivers said they had driven when their blood alcohol content was probably at or near the legal limit at least once in the last month.

AAA also found about 33 percent of drivers had a friend or relative who was killed or seriously hurt in a crash.
