TAPPAHANNOCK, Va. -- Wednesday's storms devastated the town of Tappahannock in Essex County. At least 25 people were hurt, according to Virginia State Police. There have been no confirmed fatalities.
The destruction was widespread with at least 15 buildings destroyed and another 30 buildings damaged. Among them, a church.
"We were sitting in the middle of the home when it came through," Neil Harvey, who had a tree damage his house, said "It demolished everything."
Emergency officials opened a temporary shelter at Essex Intermediate School Wednesday night.
The reported tornado touched down just before 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Several people were trapped in their homes and had to be rescued. By Thursday morning, firefighters said everyone had been accounted for.
"The church is gone, a lot of people are hurt down there," said Harvey. "The community came together and we cleared the road so emergency services could get to the people. My heart goes out to everyone down here."
The National Guard dispatched troops to Tappahannock to help with the cleanup efforts.
