VALDESE, North Carolina — A North Carolina man was stocking shelves at a Food Lion grocery store when his heart stopped beating.

Michael Kiddy, 60, was unconscious in the store aisle, until first responders arrived, including his son.

Steve Kiddy, a fireman, said he arrived on the scene and was only concerned with saving the man’s life. He said the victim’s face was covered with a guard used in CPR.

“My chief came up and asked me if I’m alright,” Steve told WBTV. “and then it dawned on me to check and see who this person is.”

When Steve realized it was his father, he stood up and let others take over.

Michael was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. He spent ten days in the hospital.

“The doctors said it didn’t do any lasting damage,” Steve said.

Michael said he is eternally grateful for all the first responders, including his son, that helped save his life.

“From the beginning all the way to the hospital. I mean I can’t express how much I do appreciate it. Really.”

“The CPR saved his life without a doubt,” Steve said.

“It’s special because they say I was really, really gone,” Michael said, “And here I sit.”
