HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — Police in Henrico issued a warning about a phone scam that has been going around the county this month. It begins then the phone rings and the person on the line identifies themselves as a member of law enforcement.
“The caller attempts to persuade the victim that they have missed jury duty and there is an outstanding warrant for their arrest,” Henrico Police posted on Facebook. “The caller then informs the intended victim that they can avoid arrest by paying a fine via a pre-paid gift card, instructs the intended victim to proceed to a retail establishment, purchase a pre-paid gift card, and provide them with the number associated with the card while staying on the phone. Once the victim provides the gift card number, the victim has then lost the money placed on the card.”
Henrico Police officer the following reminders:
- You are notified in advance before you are called to serve on a jury by official correspondence from the court.
- If a warrant has been issued for your arrest, any form of payment will not quash the warrant.
