RICHMOND, Va. -- A cold front will move through the state this evening.  Ahead of it, warmer and more unstable air will surge into the area. A line of thunderstorms will track across the region into early this evening.

The storms will produce locally heavy rainfall, but isolated storms could be severe.   The best chance of this will be across central and southeastern Virginia where temperatures will be warmer and breaks in the cloud cover will occur.   The most unstable part of this system will stay in North Carolina, so our severe threat is not high.

The main threat would be strong wind gusts and perhaps some hail, but the atmosphere will support some rotation in the storms, so an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. The chance of tornadoes is not very high, but the threat is not zero.  Again, the risk of severe weather is fairly low, but an isolated severe storm or two is possible.
