Training for the April 9th Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K starts Saturday at local YMCA’s. Members and non-members are welcome to join the Training Teams. To register for the 10K and train visit http://www.sportsbackers.org/training-team/ymca-10k-training-team/.

RVA’s Coolest Winter Festival – Shiver in the River is back and registration is open to individuals, groups and teams of one, two or more. You can clean up, walk or run or jump in the James River or do all three. This is a benefit for Keep Virginia Beautiful. Registration starts at 10am with a community clean up of the James River and in communities throughout the River City. New this year is the 5K Walk/Run at noon and the James River Jump, the highlight of the event follows at 1:30pm. Participants can dip their feet, go in waist length or take a full body dip for the James River jump at Historic Tredegar Waterfront. During the days events there’s also a winter festival from 11am – 4pm with food trucks and live music. To register and get more information visit www.shiverintheriver.com.

Virginia War Memorial’s Winter Artifacts Roadshow  starts at 10am  and goes to 12:30pm. Noted Military memorabilia experts will be on hand to review and offer insights on the history of military items from the Revolutionary war until today, so bring that old uniform cap or helmet, or box of medals and ribbons, flag, sword or canteen. It’s free to attend, first come first serve, parking is free but donations are appreciated to the Virginia War Memorial Foundation.  The Memorial is located at 621 South Belvidere Street. GRASP, Great Aspirations Scholarship Program, Inc for “Saturdays at the Library” has been rescheduled to Saturday, January 30, the second date is  Saturday, February 27 at the Richmond Public Library, 101 East Franklin Street, Richmond. Students and parents need to bring with them several items that include student’s and parent’s Social Security Number, Family’s current bank statements, student’s alien registration card (if not a citizen) student’s 2015 W-2 Forms and other records of money and several others necessary paperwork. The Richmond community continues its celebration of the Legacy of a Legend, Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker, Dr. Walker served as Chief of Staff to Dr. Martin Luther King Junior and according to organizers Dr. Walker was the key strategist for Dr. King during the early years of the civil rights movement.  On Saturday from 1pm -3pm at VUU Claude G. Perkins Living and Learning Center, Local and National Community Leaders will celebrate the Life and Legacy of Dr. Walker.  Mark S. Tillman, General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc will also honor Dr. Walker for his 70 years of membership with the Fraternity. 2016 Eastern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships continues through Saturday at the Richmond Coliseum and the Great Richmond Convention Center. More than two thousand skaters will compete and earn the right to advance to the 2016 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan in February.  The event hosted by the Richmond Skating Club is sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating.
