HANOVER COUNTY, Va. — The man who hit and killed a tow truck driver on the side of Interstate 295 in Hanover was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Dwayne Miller Jr. was sentenced to nine years for reckless involuntary DUI manslaughter and two years for failure to stop at the scene of an accident, according to court records.

Miller’s SUV struck and killed tow truck driver Jason Bailey, 22,  as Bailey removed a vehicle on the side of the highway in May 2014. Miller’s vehicle crashed into a ditch shortly after hitting Bailey. Miller got out of the SUV and ran.

“Residents of the subdivision provided a description of a man seen running through the neighborhood,” a Virginia State Police spokeswoman said at the time. “Based on the witness statements, the two troopers located the subject and took him into custody without incident.”

The crash happened about 8:25 p.m. near the Mechanicsville Turnpike (Route 360) exit. Court records indicated Miller at first admitted he had been drinking a lot, but later changed his story. Court records also indicated Miller’s birthday was the day after the crash.
