RICHMOND, Va — An Ohio mom wanted to warn other parents after she made a  common car seat mistake.  The mom said she was strapping her child into the car seat — which was on a shopping cart — when a light wind pushed one wheel of the cart over the curb. The wind knocked the cart over and caused the child seat to fall off the cart.

Fortunately, the mom said, her preschooler was not in the child seat at the time. She said it was a good reminder to not put the car seat on the cart, even if it locked into place.

“Please, please, please parents do not put the car seat on the top part of the cart! Any car seat technician will tell you that it’s extremely unsafe,” she posted. “I post this PSA without judgement, as I myself did this with both boys. Up until about 2 years ago, I thought the seat was safe since it clicks into place. But the car seat in the picture was ‘locked’ into place.”

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advised against placing car seats in shopping carts. The commission said falls from carts were among the leading causes of head injuries to children.

Children can fall even when they’re in an infant carrier, car seat, or an infant seat, according to the agency.
