HANOVER COUNTY, Va. -- A normally quiet West Hanover community was rudely interrupted by the news of three separate home break-ins Monday afternoon.

"TV's gone, back door wide open and the bed off rails,” said Hanover mom Julia Boor.

She said she’s struggling to understand how the thief got by her four-legged security.

The Hanover homeowner believes a thief, who had just broken into her home, used a water wand to smack her otherwise intimidating German Shepherds.

She noticed her dogs were acting strangely when she got home Monday evening. She and her husband both believe they were smacked with a watering wand that had been on their porch, but found by deputies upstairs.

"I mean, the way they bark is pretty intimidating for people who don't know,” said Boor.

Right down the street, another neighbor’s door was kicked in and three guns were swiped.

On King Road, another house was broken into with two hand guns and one shotgun missing.

Neal Hynson lives down the street. "Most people out here have guns, lots of guns," Hynson said.

Hynson's home wasn't broken into, but he knows the feeling all too well. Fifteen years ago he was a victim of a home break-in and says it still seems fresh.

"The guy drove by and stuck his head out and said, “Don't call the police,” and he said he had a gun to make sure I didn't," he said.

A haunting experience that now others are feeling as they try to plug in their lives and move on from a stab at their sense of security.

Boor said the thief may have felt bad or at least had a bad stomach, because he stole Rolaids as well.

“Yes, went into my sons room and took a whole bottle of them,” Boor said.

CBS 6 talked with law enforcement sources in neighboring counties Tuesday night. Louisa said they've had four daytime break-ins recently in the eastern part of the county that borders Hanover.

They don't think it's the same suspect.

Law enforcement sources said Spotsylvania had two break-ins over the weekend where guns were stolen.

Anyone with information about the burglaries was asked to call the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office at 804-365-6140 or Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000. Additionally, anyone with a news tip can submit one here.
