CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about an “active phone scam” that targets anyone who answers their phone. When the potential victim answers, the scammer on the other end identifies himself as a Chesterfield County Sheriff’s deputy.
“The [scammers] are advising people that they have missed jury duty. The callers tell the person who answers the phone that they have arrest warrants issued against them for Failure to Appear and Contempt of Court,” Chesterfield Sheriff Karl Leonard said. “The individuals advise them that they are to report to court on a specific date, or they can pay a fine of $2,000 to avoid being arrested and coming to court.”
The scammer then tells the person on the phone to wire the money to them at Kroger.
Anyone who has been targeted by this scam was asked to call Chesterfield Police at 804-748-1251.
