RICHMOND, Va. — A Richmond institution well known as one of the few places to allow smoking inside has decided to extinguish its policy.

As of January 15, Bandito’s will be completely non-smoking.

A statewide law took effect back on Dec. 1, 2009 when Tim Kaine was governor. There were some exceptions to the law though and Bandito’s was able to maintain a smoking room. If a restaurant had a designated room that was structurally separate from non-smoking dining rooms, and separately vented, then smokers could continue to puff away indoors.

As owner Sean McClain said, “We got a bit of spotlight for that back when the smoking law changed.”

Well, now he’s starting fresh in the New Year with a non-smoking environment.

McClain said he’s had requests throughout the years, and the comments on Bandito’s Facebook page have been mostly positive so far.

Another establishment has liberated itself from cigarette smoke. Patrick Henry’s Pub, in Church Hill, became smoke-free their first day open in the New Year.
