RICHMOND, Va. -- The owner of Refuge for men barbershop on Main Street in Richmond donated $9,100 that she raised through her business to the VCU Massey Cancer Center.

“We are happy to be a part of it,” said storefront owner Dot Reid.

“Typically most guys think of their grooming or their health when they are at the barbershop or the gym,” Reid explained. “We figured this was an ideal place to bring up the conversation.”

The money was raised from sales of gift cards and a “No shave November” fundraiser to spread awareness about cancers that affect men.

Reid also hopes her donation will spur other businesses to find ways to help others.

VCU Massey Cancer Center is considered one of the best cancer centers in the country, and is one of two in Virginia designated by the National Cancer Institute to lead and shape America’s cancer research efforts.
