RICHMOND, Va. — The NFL released the match-ups that will be played in London during the 2016 schedule, and the Washington Redskins are making their first regular season trip across the pond. The Redskins will take on the Cincinnati Bengals at Wembley Stadium on October 30, 2016 and there is the possibility that the Redskins could be playing a second game as well.

The Redskins could also face the St. Louis Rams at Twickenham Stadium a week earlier, pending the results and standings of the 2015 regular season. According to NFL scheduling rules, the Rams are set to face the NFC East team that finishes in the same position the Rams do in their respective divisions on October 23rd of 2016. That game for the Rams has been committed to London. If the Redskins and Rams finish in the same spot, the Redskins would be the 1st team in NFL history to play consecutive regular season games overseas.

Both games would be road games for the Redskins, meaning they would still get 8 home games next year at FedEx Field. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder serves on the NFL’s International Committee.

“We are excited to showcase the Washington Redskins on an international stage” Synder said in a statement released by the team. “We are honored to help grow the game overseas.”

“The Washington Redskins are proud to be one of the most popular sports teams in the world,” team President Bruce Allen said. “We look forward to seeing our fans from everywhere come together in London.”

This would not be the first time the Redskins have played outside the United States. They took on Buffalo in a game in Toronto in 2011, and have played preseason games in Japan in 2002 and in old Wembley Stadium back in 1992.
