NORFOLK, Va. – Two men employed at the Norfolk International Airport admitted they stole items from passenger’s luggage.
Chris Arthur Perry, 25, of Chesapeake and Gregory Paul Wingard, Jr. 27 of Norfolk, pleaded guilty on Wednesday.
They could spend the next five years behind bars after they admitted to conspiracy to steal valuable items from baggage at the airport.
The men, from December 2013 to June 2015, used their positions as baggage handlers to break into checked baggage in the secure area of the airport.
They said they stole money, electronics and other valuable items.
Afterwards, they sold the items to other people or to pawn shops in the area.
The men targeted firearm containers while looking for bags to break into, according to court documents.
Part of their plan was to take the guns by switching baggage tags, causing the containers to be taken away from the original intended destination, which they said prevented law enforcement from detecting them.
Perry and Winegard were indicted on Oct. 7.
They will be sentenced on March 14, 2016.
