RICHMOND, Va. - Portions of Monument Avenue will be closed Thursday and Friday while construction continues on the roundabout conversion project at the Lee monument. The right lane on both sides of Monument Avenue will be closed as it approaches the Lee monument. The affected area stretches from Meadow Street to Lombardy Street on either side of the statue. Lane closures are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

The Richmond Department of Public works is converting the intersection of Monument Avenue and Allen Avenue into a "modern roundabout." Work will include extending the median and corner island extensions at all four points of entry into the roundabout, installation of new sidewalks and crosswalks, and landscaping.

Construction on the project began in early October and will continue through January 2016. During that time period, drivers can expect periodic lane closures near the Lee Monument and are urged to use caution when approaching the construction zone.
