RICHMOND, Va. -- A crash is slowing traffic on Interstate 95 south near Bells Road near the Richmond and Chesterfield line. The driver of a four-door car veered off the interstate, according to WTVR CBS 6 reporter Jake Burns who happened to be driving behind the car that crashed.

As the car veered, it quickly approached an 18-wheeler parked on the shoulder. At the last moment, the driver of the car attempted to avoid the big rig, but it was too late. The car clipped the truck and spun several times before it came to a stop on Interstate 95.

The driver survived the crash.  Troopers said the man suffered a really bad gash to his head, but is going to be okay.

State police said the driver of the sedan lost control of his vehicle because of a coughing fit.

"Motorists can expect major delays due to a tractor trailer accident. The south center lane, right lane, and right shoulder are closed," VDOT advised.

The scene cleared several hours later.
