RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond Public School leaders are taking steps to alleviate overcrowding in city schools. Overcrowding is currently an issue for some schools in the city, they said, and the problem will grow exponentially over the next 10 years. The areas seeing the most growth are the city's Fan District and Southside.

The district predicts some schools will be at 160 percent capacity in the next decade.

The school board has several different plans to attack the overcrowding issue and create more room for the expected increase in student enrollment.

The possibilities include:

  • Closing some schools
  • Building new schools
  • Renovating old school buildings

Charts and graphs released by the school district show all of the plans will cost millions of dollars. Richmond Public Schools hope to have a final plan of action by March 2016.

The school board is holding its first planning meeting Tuesday, October 27 at 6 p.m. at Carver Elementary. The meeting is open to he public.
