RICHMOND, Va. -- An area of surface low pressure along the northern Gulf of Mexico will move northeastward towards the Mid-Atlantic Tuesday. In the upper levels, a broad trough of low pressure will produce strong lift over the region, resulting in widespread rain for Virginia late Tuesday through Wednesday.

Tuesday will remain cool as strong high pressure over New England keeps dry and cool air in place over the Commonwealth. A warm front will lift northward Wednesday morning, however, spreading warm and moist air over the region. The combination of warmth, moisture, and lift will be sufficient for a few thunderstorms during the day Wednesday.

The rain will come to an end late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, yielding partly cloudy and dry conditions on Thursday.
