ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico -- A four-year-old girl was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon during what police described as a road rage incident. Details are sketchy, and Albuquerque Police Chief Gorden Eden said police don't have information on a suspect yet, mainly because of conflicting statements from witnesses about the description of the car from which shots were fired.

"I have never seen it before," Eden said. "I've seen tragic loss of children in car crashes. To me this is one of those crimes which is unexplainable."

What is known is that a sheriff's deputy spotted a disabled vehicle on Interstate 40 and pulled over to help, according to CNN affiliate KRQE. That's when the girl's father said his daughter had been shot.

Police had not yet interviewed the girl's family because they needed time to grieve, Eden said.

What led up to the shooting was unclear Tuesday night, and detectives said the suspect probably fired off shots while driving, KRQE said. Eden begged for the public's help in figuring out who did this.

"We are in desperate need of information to help us resolve the conflicting information we're getting right now," he said. "This should have never happened. This is a complete disrespect of human life."

Police said no one else was injured in the shooting.
