NEW YORK – A 27-year-old mother of four has been charged with murdering her six-month-old daughter after she allegedly dropped the child from a sixth-story window Thursday afternoon.
Tenisha Fearon had nothing to say before police drove her to court Friday, but she did make a comment to her godmother who was watching from the sidewalk.
“She said, 'I tried to tell you, Miss Louella.' But I don't understand," Louella Hatch told WCBS.
Hatch is unable to comprehend what led to the crime scene outside Fearon's apartment building on Tiebout Avenue Thursday afternoon.
Witnesses said the mother had been dangling her baby, Janillah Lawrence, out the window. That’s when neighbors said she dropped the child and she fell six stories.
Bystanders called 911 and when police and paramedics arrived they found little Janillah unresponsive on the sidewalk.
"I just heard a thump,” neighbor Lizette Rodriguez said. “And that's when people start screaming, ‘No, no, no, no! And they start screaming, yelling at her, ‘Don't do it.’"
Investigators said Fearon's three other children ages 4-10 were in the apartment when this happened. They are now in state custody
Police said during questioning Fearon would not explain why she allegedly dropped the child.
Her godmother said that if Fearon was having problems, she never told her about it. She questions if the mother may have suffered from postpartum depression and never spoke up.
“This is a disease and no one detects it if you're sick you don't know what you're doing,” Hatch said.
In fact, Hatch said she had just spent time with Fearon and her kids the day before and described her as a loving mother.
She said she could have never imagined that would be the last time she would see Janillah.
“You know that's an angel -- God will take care of her,” she said.
