Police identify victim in fatal Cartersville Road crash in Powhatan

POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. — One lane has reopened, after a a single vehicle fatal accident closed northbound Cartersville Road, Route 684, near St. Emma Drive, in Powhatan.

Police identified the victim as 35-year-old Charles Morris Jr. of Powhatan.

“Virginia State Police are on scene of a fatal vehicle crash  that occurred in the  5000 block of Cartersville Road in Powhatan County,” Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said. “The crash occurred around 3:10 p.m. this afternoon. Troopers are still investigating the crash at this time.”

A 1998 Dodge was traveling west on Cartersville Road when it ran off the road right and struck a tree. The driver (single occupant) of the Dodge died at the scene.  It is unknown if the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Powhatan crash

Wet weather has been moving through Central Virginia most of Tuesday afternoon. Speed and weather are being considered factors in the crash which remains under investigation.

Traffic is getting by using alternating lane closures. Expect delays.
